Daily Painting 11.24.09

Day 49 - 8X6 oil on canvas. Painted this in less than one hour. Tried to work as fast as possible and with a monochromatic value scale. Just mixed Ult blue, cad red light, and cad Yellow + white.

Happy with the rainy day feel of this painting. Can see some perspective issues here and there that can be fixed given more time.

Daily Painting 11.22.09

Day 47 - oil painting sketch of marsh. This is a 5X7 oil of a marsh I have been trying to expand into a larger painting in the studio. Needed to step back and paint a few quick studies to get focused again. Actually have not posted in about 4 days. Had to work overnight Thursday and it took a couple days to recover enough to get painting again.

Heading to the Cape tomorrow for work and plan on bringing my pochade box and maybe whipping out a couple oil sketches on my lunch break

Daily Painting 11.17.09

Day 42 - Wasn't able to get a completed daily painting in today but started working on this one. This is larger than I have been working (12X16) on hardboard with mounted Belgium linen - very nice to paint on but expensive! Like the way this is coming. Just blocking in the darks at this point and highlighting the focal point of the painting on the right (sunny distant field). Hope to have this finished tomorrow or the next day. Want to keep a alla prima/plein air look and feel to this painting.

Daily Painting 11.16.09

Day 41 - 8x6 oil painting of Boston from Pete's Hill in the Arnold Arboretum. Painted en plein air from 1200-1300. Very windy and kind of cold on the hill. Usually when painting outside in public you just worry about people talking to you for an hour but this time I sat with the Pochade painting box on my lap and just tried not to get bitten by all the dogs unleashed by their owners!

Daily Painting 11.15.09

Day 40 - 6x6 oil painting of a church across the street from my house. Completed en plein air on my porch tonight. Photo of the piece could be better but the glare on the wet oil paint is killer for the camera. Really like this night scene. Had to add the telephone pole in front to create a more interesting composition and the pole is in the form of a cross and which seems fitting in a painting where the subject is a church.

Daily Painting 11.12.09

Day 39 - 4x6 oil painting of the Colosseum in Rome Italy. Painted in 1 hour with a palette knife. Used a photo reference for this one but tried to keep it very loose and abstract.

Daily Painting 11.11.09

Day 38 - 8x6 oil painting of pond in Bird Park near my house in Walpole MA. Painted on-site (plein air) in 1 hour between 12 and 1pm. Very cloudy and cool. Think I was able to capture the feeling of the fall day in the short amount of time.

Daily Painting 11.8.09 and 11.9.09

Day 35 - 8x6 oil of church across the street from my house. Painted this in 1 hour from my porch. Could use more refining and minor corrections in perspective but limited myself to 1 hour and I'm sticking to it....

Day 36 - 8X6 oil of sunset in Newport harbor. Completed in 1 hour from a photo reference. Very tired tonight since I worked overnight last night and only got a few hours of sleep this morning. But overall, happy with the bright sunset affect and use of the palette knife.

Daily Painting 11.7.2009

Day 34 - oil painting of marsh behind Bass Pro Shop in Foxborough MA. Completed on site in 1 hour between 1300-1400. Enjoyed doing this one on such a nice day. Would like to have gotten a little darker shadows in the foreground. May go back tomorrow morning to get another one in this weekend.

Daily Painting 11.5.2009

Day 32 - 6x8 oil painting of a toy horse. Spent about 1 1/2 hours on this. Could use a lot more work but limiting myself to just a couple hours at the most for each daily painting. Could have used more bold brushwork and made each stroke of the brush stand on it's own. Just need to loosen up a little.

Daily Painting 11.3.2009

Day 30 - 6X8 oil painting of apple blossoms. Completed in about 1 hour in studio. Like this one but would include more lost edges and more bold and fewer brush strokes of color to capture the flower petals.

Daily Painting 11.2.2009

Day 29 - 6X8 oil painting of Honfleur Harbor France. Completed in about 2 hours from a photo reference. This is the same subject as Day 27. I wanted to improve on the technique of using abstract forms and soft edges for the buildings while keeping hard edges for the carousel so the viewers eyes are drawn there. Overall, this one has a nice feel to it however the digital photo of the painting could be much better.

Daily Painting 11.1.2009

Day 28 - 8x6 oil painting of St Mark's in Italy at night. Completed in about 1 hour from a photo reference. A lot of detail to simplify in the painting. Think i captured the felling of being there but very tired tonight with this daylight savings time and my kids being up at 0400! Please let them sleep through the night tonight :)
