Daily Painting 10.31.2009

Day 27 - 6X8 oil painting of Honfleur Harbor in France. Completed in about 1 hour from a photo reference. I'm happy with the loose brush work but composition could be better. The water line kind of breaks the painting into two equal halves.

Daily Painting 10.30.2009

Day 26 - 8X6 oil painting of a field with apple blossoms. Completed in about 1/2 hour. Tried to keep this very abstract and loose by limiting myself to 1/2 hour and color mixing very fast with large filbert brushes.

Day 25 - 6X8 oil painting. Completed in 1 hour from a photo reference. Really tried to be loose with the brush work on this one.

Daily Painting 10.23.09

Day 19 - 5X7 oil painting of sunset on the Maine Coast in Acadia National Park. This was completed in less than an hour using a photo reference but I modified 99% of the picture. I wanted to practice doing some sunset skies so I wasn't too interested in providing much if any detail of the foreground.

Day 18 - 5X7 oil painting of the sun shinning through trees. Used a photo reference to paint this in about 1 hour.

Daily Painting 10.19.09

Day 15 - oil painting on board. This painting was completed in about 1 hour. I painted it from a photo that I took of a mountain in Alaska. I liked how the cloud was drifting across the prairie and the light and shadows on the snow topped mountain.
I'm pretty happy with this one. I used a large Filbert brush for 95% of the painting and I feel this made the biggest impact. It allowed me to focus on the major forms and to create interesting brushwork.

Daily Painting 10.18.09

Day 14 - 5X6 oil painting on canvas. Completed this painting in 1 hour. Used a photo from an art magazine. Scene was originally done by and artist named Kevin Macpherson.
This was a great exercise for testing my paint mixing abilities. I believe I was able to match most of the color notes he used although the bushes in the foreground could have been a bit brighter.

Daily Painting 10.17.09

Day 13 - 5X6 oil painting. Completed in about 1 1/2 hours. From photograph. I'm happy with the mountains and some of the foreground but since this is such a small canvas it was necessary to keep most of the shapes very abstract. Some of the shapes in the foreground could be better. Could have spent more time sketching out the shapes in the foreground because there is a lot going on in a small 5X6 area.

Daily Paintng 10.16.09

Day 12 - 8X10 oil painting. Completed in about 1 1/2 hours. I think the background trees came out well but could use more work. The foreground snow could use more contrast i.e. yellows and blues. Also, the large rock in the upper left hand side could stand out more from the surounding snow.

Seems the hardest thing for me is allowing myself only a couple hours at the most for each painting but with time I think more of my work will be able to express what I'm after in that period of time.

Daily Paintng 10.14.09

Day 10 - 8X10 oil painting of an overcast day on the Maine Coast. Completed this painting in less than 1 hour. Started painting at 0700 in the morning so I could be sure to get my daily painting completed for the day. I'm happy with the color tones and atmosphere with this painting. The composition is pleasing to the eye by leading the viewer down the rocky beach.

Daily Painting 10.12.09

Day 8 - 6x8 oil painting. I completed this in about two hours. I was inspired by a photograph I took while hiking one early winter's morning. I tried to capture the low early morning sunlight coming through the trees and the interesting shadows and colors of the fallen snow.

Although I worked with a photo, I just used it as insperation and not to copy every detail. I have found that directly working or copying a photo can affect the final look of the painting by not providing the emotional connection with the viewer.

Daily Paintng 10.11.09

Day 7 - 8X10 Oil painting of Foxboro Stadium. Completed in about 3 hours. May do some more detail work sometime but had to call it a night. (actually just noticed that the building on the right needs some detail to break-up the large dark area). Also close to midnight and that would mean I missed a painting for the day if I didn't upload something.
Also, keep an eye out for an upcoming Plein Air Painting Event at Foxboro Patriot's Place that I will be attending. Great opportunity to see works in progress and even purchase some work directly from the artists.

Daily Painting 10.8.2009

Daily Painting #4, Oct 8th. 6X8 oil Maine Coast on Twitpic

Day 4, 10/8/2009 - 6X8 oil sketch, Oguinquit Maine from photo references. Palette of Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, Ult Blue, Burnt Siens, Titanium White.Feeling good about this one. Worked on this one for almost 3 hours. Got carried away orking the rocks in the foreground. Colors are much brighter when looking at the painting in person. A lot of cool orange and red notes. Will work on being looser with the brush work and creating more lost and found edges within the painting. I tend to put in too much detail at times and should suggest forms within the painting and let the viewer's mind fill in the detail. Overall better than yesterday's.
